7 weeks ago I delivered a beautiful baby boy. One of the most incredible days of my life… next to the birth of our first son and our wedding :-). During my pregnancy I gained about 54lbs pushing me to 202lbs, HOLY SHIT!! Now, I have been very lucky in that a huge chunk of that has fallen off (38lbs to be exact) through breastfeeding, eating less and light exercise. When I got pregnant I was up a few pounds from my goal weight – or what I like to refer to my fighting weight – hah. The day I found out I was pregnant I was 148lbs. Needless to say, I have another good chunk of weight I need to get rid of. My goal weight right now is 130lbs. That means I still have 34lbs to lose.
After having my baby (via c section) I was feeling pretty good the first several weeks and my incision was not bothering me at all ~ could it have been the pain meds I was taking? I began to take short walks with the baby to get out and have some fresh air. I also resumed normal household activities. You know, the fun ones – laundry, cleaning, vacuuming, etc. And then it comes, I got an infection in my incision. So, I curtailed everything in order to heal and get better. Fast forward to today – all better now. I am off work for another 4 weeks so now is the best time for me to get my shape, fitness and overall health back. While lying in bed the other night I had a light bulb moment (as I often do). I made a decision right then that the next day would be the day I begin to lose the weight and get back in shape. You might be thinking what’s the big deal right? Well, this was on a Wednesday evening. So that meant the next day, Thursday would be the day. Most people start their weight loss efforts on a Monday or the first of the month!!! That’s what the big deal is. No need to wait, never a better time than right now. Seems like a simple decision to make and I have to tell you I found it very motivating. I didn’t have any groceries in the house, that could have easily been a reason to put it off, but NO way!
So, I once again begin the weight loss journey. I do not profess to be perfect. I am not a believer of restricting ones diet or not eating certain things. I know for me this does NOT work. The minute I say I am NOT going to eat something I eat it…yes, a true rebel I am. I will be more conscious about what I eat and know that it all affects the end goal.
One of Thomas Jefferson’s rules of conduct state “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” – I just love that.
The inevitable question – what are you new years resolutions? I had to look back at last year’s post to remember if I did resolutions – nope! If you look up resolution in the dictionary it is to ‘resolve’ or find a solution to. So, why would I plan a new year by resolving something from 2012? Makes no sense. I think we get caught up in societal silliness around holidays. This year I will continue to set goals and lay out a plan to accomplish them. I have not set any goals yet as I am waiting to have my BABY!!! Obviously my first order of buisness will be to get back to a reasonable weight, and resume my fitness plan. But, since I don’t know when that will be or how much I need to lose I am going to relax for now and cross that bridge when the time comes. For now I will focus on settling into having a newborn and enjoy all the preciousness that will accompany that.
I encourage you to think about laying out a yearly plan for 2013 and what you would like to achieve. Once you do that each item can be broken down into manageable goals on a daily, weekly or monthly basis so that you can see and track your progress and know that you are on track for the yearly plan! Goal setting and implementation can be tricky if your not someone who has played with goals regularly. But, I can help!!! That’s one of the things I do as a life coach, so if you need some support getting started or stahing accountable, I’m your go to girl. You can also see a post I wrote about smart goals here.
And, here’s to your success!
Being Spiritual often relates to a person who is religious. But, not necessarily so. Spirituality has many meanings and each person defines it in their own life. However, I do think they are related. To me, Spirituality is a person who does have faith, believes in afterlife & believes in God (any form of God). A Spiritual person also understands the Universal Law, realizes there are no coincidences and we all belong to something greater. A person who has inner peace ands deep connection with others.
There are many definitions of spiritual health. One I identified with was found at Family Doctor. What is spirituality? Spirituality is the way you find meaning, hope, comfort and inner peace in your life. Many people find spirituality through religion. Some find it through music, art or a connection with nature. Others find it in their values and principles.
Whatever your definition is to Spirituality, I believe it is an important piece of the health puzzle. When one is alignment with their spirituality it keeps stress, frustration and anger from taking over your being.
In my last post my question was how healthy are you and outlined the different facest of health. In this first section I’d like to discuss physical health.
When I think of physical health the first thing that comes to mind is a person who looks physically fit. In my mind a physically fit person who works out and has muscle tone. One who has a BMI range that indicates they are in the ‘normal’ weight range for their body height. A person has endurance, strength & flexibility. On the inside too – good cholesterol numbers, blood pressure, heart rate, etc. I don’t think that body type is skinny! I think there are many different body types and sizes that can fit this category. To have or achieve physical health takes work. It takes planning, commitment, dedication and down right hard work at the gym. This is a process that takes some time and not something you ‘do’ in a week. When I started working out and losing weight my goal really was to be skinny. I wanted to have a super flat stomach and look like the Hollywood skinny bitch. Too me, that was what weight loss was all about.
It wasn’t until I was in the gym several days a week taking yoga classes and other group classes that incorporated strengthening w/cardio that I changed my tune. I began to see how my body became stronger and my endurance greater that I realized something far greater. It’s not about being the skinniest girl. It’s about being healthy. And so, my purpose changed. I started eating and excising to get HEALTHY! And with that, weight loss follows.
As I have seen people older than I have various health conditions that prevented them from doing normal activities like walking for a period of time, climbing a flight of stairs, etc. that I decided that I would do better by myself. I want to be a person who has vitality now and when I am 60 years old. I want to live a long, healthy life with my kids, grandkids, etc. Think Madonna!
And, wouldn’t you know once I focused on what is really important and took control of my health, I became pregnant! That’s no coincidence my friends! God will give you what you need/want when your ready to accept it.
I challenge you all, no matter what your life is like, to do something each day to improve your physical health.
If you follow Tara Stiles then you have heard her use the term find the ease several times. Find the ease in your yoga practice, find the ease in life. I have come to the sad realization today that I just can’t find the ease in yoga right now (pregnant). I have a prenatal yoga DVD and have taken a class. It just does not feel right and feels like I am squishing the sides of my belly with every lunge, child pose & down dog. So, since I can’t find the ease I have the awareness to back off and not force it. Although, I am seriously bummed about this. But, I know that it’s only temporary. So, I will stick to what I can do with ease right now: hiking, walking and prenatal cardio DVD’s. Last night I went for a 30 minute walk and it felt so good. I walked 1.61 miles and my pace was 19.27 per mile (very slow, hah). Tonight’s was was 35 minutes, 1.93 miles and a pace of 18:34 a mile. My goal was to increase my time but I did not have a specific goal when I set out tonite. I am very excited.
The Tone it up Beach Week kicks off tomorrow – Monday! Only one week left until Labor Day! If you are ready to take your fitness skills to another level, you don’t want to miss out. And, if your not following them on Twitter & Facebook your insane!
On May 15th 2012 I found out that I had a bun in the oven. Yep. Took the standard store bought pregnancy test and got the great news. After going to the doctor’s office to take their official ‘pregnancy test’ it double confirmed. There are lots of great things to describe my husband, sometimes he’s just a kid at heart, one thing I really love about him.
So, were driving home and he say’s “I might just go to Baskin Robbins to celebrate.” And so we did. What we did not know was that Tuesday’s are Family Night at BR31. The kids scoops are only a $1 and regular are $1.50.
Ever since May 15th, we have been going every week to ‘celebrate.’ I guess this is now our little tradition! When I think back on other traditions, I can’t really say we have any. It may seem silly but I am digging this new little ‘family’ thing that we are doing. Who doesn’t have a good time getting ice cream right? Perfect ending to a work day!
Ice cream & smiles ~ Stephanie
Sometimes it’s so hard to blog. What do you blog about when your not motivated to work out and your constantly being pulled in the direction of the most gluttonous food? Pound by pound the scale goes up and you swear you will start ‘being good’ tomorrow. Tomorrow has not come recently. Sometimes a weight loss coach needs her own coach.
Now, take the highly unmotivated coach and get her pregnant. Tired, hungry and super over indulging. Not exactly good material to share. Yep, I am having a baby. The first several weeks were exhausting and I would sleep for hours after coming home from work. I definitely have more energy now, but the thought of doing exercise makes me tired. I sure hope this passes quick. I would like to retain some sort fitness.
Funny, it’s kinda like the reality series shows where the matchmaker is single, the love expert can’t find a good guy….
Sometimes, finding the ‘why’ isn’t the important part. Thinking too much about the why can spiral one into a internal debate and can be seriously DEmotivating. Each day is not always going to be a bouquet of flowers. Hopefully more days will than not. Today, was another day where I just felt ‘fat’, bloated and pregnant…Not pregs, just when I get so bloated it looks like I swallowed a balloon. What’s interesting is when I am feeling this way for some reason I feel like I need to eat heavy, large meals. Maybe to fill the space with something real instead of air? I dunno. Of course I am trying to figure out ‘why’ I am feeling this way today. Was it the fiber one bar this morning? Did I eat something that my system can’t process? Why, Why, Why? While sitting on the couch after work watching an always entertaining episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta, I decided to browse Facebook. My lovely trainers Tone it Up popped up on my feed and they were featuring before and after pictures of one of the member’s Brianna Sky. Now, if this doesn’t motivate you to get off your butt, your helpless. I couldn’t just continue to sit there in my bloated body listening to Nene Leakes run her gawd awful mouth. I had to get up. Got into some comfy clothes, jumped into my sneakers and I was almost ready to go. I opened up my Youtube channel and went right to my favorites and chose two of my favorite videos by Tone It Up. Both, from the 2011 Bikini Series. First up I chose the Sandcastle workout followed by the Bikini Strap workout. Let me tell you, by the time I completed the Sandcastle workout (15 mins) I was sweating!!! NO JOKE. These girls get you working quickly!
You don’t need a lot of space to work out. And, you don’t need a lot of time. So, you see there are no real reasons why you cannot fit in a workout. Only self sabotaging excuses. Below are a couple quick pics I took to show you how I quickly and easily rigged up my laptop on the coffee table so I could workout to the video.
Here’s to getting off the couch..cheers.
